Quieting the Inner Critic: Imposter Syndrome

On episode 55 of The Mod Co Podcast I chat with Heather Jones.

Heather is a Native New Yorker who now resides in Alabama with her wonderful husband and two beautiful children. She's a lifelong lover of books, animals, and creating.

Heather is a certified life coach who has taken the long route with many exciting endeavors on her way here.

At 18, she joined the Army, met her husband, and after serving six years, exited the military.

Early on, she studied baking and pastry arts, which she happily implements in her own kitchen for her friends and family's benefit.

She entered the entrepreneurial world officially as an Etsy shop owner, and over time, while enjoyable, she realized there was something more she wanted to do, and that is when she found her passion to inspire and empower others. That is where she found coaching.

Angel: What does being a life coach for mompreneurs entail?

Heather: I work with moms, typically moms of school-aged kids on finding their version of work-life balance so that they can work when they are intending to work without guilt.

When their family is home and they're doing the family time, they're not thinking about work, they're not thinking about the tasks that are undone.

They've found that balance and flow and scheduling. The huge thing for mompreneurs that gets overlooked is self-care.

Angel: What is something other than finding balance that you find that mompreneurs are struggling with a lot?

Heather: Outside of the balance and the self-care that I mentioned, a huge thing for mompreneurs, entrepreneurs as a whole, but since I work with mompreneurs, we'll focus there, is imposter syndrome.

"I'm really excited that you asked it that way because the word fight, I wanted to kind of highlight here because so many times we think we are in a battle with these things that we don't want in our lives." - Heather

"I like that because it puts a positive spin on it, like you said, because fight can be such a negative word, but when you say quiet or shifting or overcoming, those are positive words, and so that makes you look at it as more of a positive thing, like, I'm trying to shift this imposter syndrome, I'm going to turn this into a positive." - Angel

Angel: How can we shift and quiet the imposter syndrome?

Heather: The thing about imposter syndrome that's very important to understand is it's not the same as self-doubt. We do have self-doubt when we have imposter syndrome, but it was so much deeper than that. Imposter syndrome exists at the identity level.

It's a strong feeling about who you are, what you are capable of, and more frequently, what you're not capable of.

"You have to be able to shift that into a positive, and eventually it will become a habit of you kind of just stopping yourself before the negative thought even comes out." -Heather
